Protonwerk is the platform for contemporary music, created by Ensemble Proton Bern. With the support of Swiss Cultural Foundation Pro Helvetia we have been working together to inspire the upcoming generation of composers at the beginning of their professional careers. Those interested can apply to receive a commission to write a new work for one of the annual Protonwerk concerts. One of the key aspects of these new work commissions is the chance to write for the recently developed instruments lupophone (bass oboe with extended range) and contraforte (an acoustically superior contrabassoon).
For the 8th edition of Protonwerk, Ensemble Proton Bern will be commissioning new works with a duration around about that of a pop song (3-4 mins), which are explicitly written for performance in a bar setting. The works will be for 2-4 musicians chosen from the available 8 core players. The music will be performed in bars and pubs where the guests don’t necessarily observe concert etiquette. The music should ideally inspire conversation: we want to broaden the enjoyment of new music!
Ensemble Proton bern will perform the pieces in its concert series NMIDB (Neue Musik in der Beiz or New Music in the Pub) during the whole season. The concert to kick it all off will take place in the foyer of the Dampfzentrale Bern.
