Atria, Vicente (*1992)

The Pilgrimage of Paracelsus (2026) UA, com

Our programme «Heimkommen» is decoupled from time and space: microtonal musical languages of the American Just Intonation tradition are combined with influences from jazz, Renaissance and folk music to form a kind of extraterrestrial «alien folk».

Vicente Atria wants to create music that can become a home for all people. To this end, he researches past and present folk music, expanding for this programme the search to Switzerland and Transylvania and combines these with musical traditions of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Thus he creates imaginary, speculative overlaps of music practises and a hopeful utopia of alternative realities that are detached from time and space.

Francesca Gaza’s music bridges contemporary tonalities, jazz influences, Baroque and Renaissance music. With respect to Bernd Alois Zimmermann's concept of the «sphericalness of time», Gaza combines stylistics from different eras and cultures with the knowledge of past generations, their traditions and practises both serious and playful.

The two world premieres will be complemented by Ben Johnston’s String Quartet No. 4 – Amazing Grace. Seemingly simple and yet refined, radical and complex, the melody of the American traditional Amazing Grace triggers a feeling of homecoming through its familiarity.
