Richard Haynes was born in 1983 in Brisbane. He studied clarinet at Griffith University in Brisbane and the University of the Arts Berne under Ernesto Molinari, graduating with a Master degree (Honours). Richard won both the Tschumi Musikpreis and the First Prize of the Swiss Nicati Competition.
He has appeared at many festivals and venues including the Tage für Neue Musik Zurich, Lucerne Festival, Archipel Festival Geneva, Sion Festival, Dampfzentrale Bern, Gare du Nord Basel, Zum Gelben Haus Schaffhausen, Meriangärten Sommerkonzerte Brüglingen, Murten Classics, Paul Klee Zentrum, Zurich University of the Arts and the University of Berne as well as the Lausanne Conservatory.
As a freelance clarinettist, he performs regularly with Ensemble Proton Bern, ELISION Ensemble, Ensemble musikFabrik, Praesenz, Klangforum Wien, MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle musik and Stroma. Many solo works for clarinet have been dedicated to him including those by Trevor Bača, Jesse Broekman, Liza Lim, Timothy McCormack, Michael Norris and Jeroen Speak.
