In Zusammenarbeit mit der SMG, Sektion Bern
In the final concert of the 2013 concert series «Proton am montag», Ensemble Proton Bern devotes itself to one of the single most important musical works of the avant-garde. Dérive 2 by Pierre Boulez is, like many projects by the French composer, the result of a work-in-progress. In 1989, a preliminary, shorter version was written, before it’s final incarnation was premiered about 10 years ago in Lucerne.
In Dérive 2, Boulez is interested in particular musical phenomena, more specifically the systematic examination of the relationship between time and rhythm. With a duration of almost 50 minutes, this self-proclaimed «research project on periodicity» is considerably longer than the first version.
The complex structure of the score and the generally high tempi demand complete concentration and virtuosity from the eleven musicians.
Ensemble Proton Bern offers an introduction to the performance of Dérive 2 in the form of a «live audio analysis» in collaboration with the Bernese division of the Swiss Musicological Society and the musicologist / music journalist, Thomas Meyer. Introduction and concert take place at the Dampfzentrale Bern and in between, there will be time for discussion with the musicians and a bite to eat.
